The Hotel Metropolitan
The Hotel Metropolitan, opposite Adelaide Central Market was constructed in 1883 for L. Penaluna, the previous owner of an earlier Metropolitan Hotel located on the eastern corner of Penaluna Place and Grote Street.
The later Hotel Metropolitan remained in the ownership of Penaluna's descendants until 1979.
Constructed of bluestone rubble, the 25-room building is typical of Adelaide's 19th Century hotels with its chamfered corner and dominant balcony and verandahs.
